Why there's no overlay panel

Retransfer printers don't need one. The image is printed onto clear retransfer film, then the film is bonded to the card — the film itself becomes the protective layer. That's also why you get true edge-to-edge printing with no white border, and why these printers handle smart cards, proximity cards and other uneven surfaces that direct-to-card printers struggle with.

Dual-sided instead?

The 800012-480 adds a second black resin panel (YMCKK) for full color on the front and black on the back, at 500 prints per roll.
